We have about 10,000 students. 3,000 of which live on campus. We block all P2P that we can identify. We use a packeteer
and our firewall IPS in combination to block them. We also have snort listening to Internet traffic. When it sees P2P,
we quarantine the user automatically. They see a web page that tells them what they have and explains the policy. After
they have cleaned their system, they can click a button to regain network access (total self-remediation). If in-fact
they still have a P2P active, they will get blocked again. They learn pretty quickly to keep it off their computers.
When they are blocked, they still have access to campus resources--email, Sakai, library,... .
We get a few complaints, not too bad.
We have never had an RIAA notice.

Subject: [SECURITY] Do you block P2P ?

How many of you block P2P on your campus? If you do block it, how many
complaints do you receive because of it?

Thanks,
Mike
