Some folks have asked who I was telling to "don't be an asshole." It
was directed at the OP, Brian Schultz.

And some folks said I was harsh... fair point.

But I guarantee you, if you break into your friend/family's stuff, you
really aren't going to prove anything to them except that you are
being an asshole. You break their privacy and trust - and they still
won't get the message you are trying to send because they will be
clouded with the emotions you caused by messing with their stuff.

If you want to help them, tell them they should be careful. And if bad
things happen to their stuff, help them out, but tell them "I told you
so" in the nicest way possible.

I think that sometimes nerds (myself included) don't understand how
people will take things because we are a bit disconnected emotionally
and tend to focus only on the more logical side of problems. We look
at the (overwhelming, to nerds,) idea of "my friends/family FAILing at
security" but then FAIL ourselves to see how to communicate this idea
to them in a way that will make them understand (the best they can)
AND keep us from looking like an asshole.

You have to meet people where they are at. Your friends/family
probably won't listen to you until they get a few knocks on the head,
but let some *real* asshole do the head knocking...
