Neal,

Are you exposing your directory server to the public internet?
Do you have a proxy such as active directory federation services?

Are you referring to something more like a web page that displays a directory search that could be protected by 
configuring .htaccess?

In an attempt to cut down on the amount email phishing we receive we're interested in see if any universities are 
protecting (or considering to protect) their outward facing web directories, or if they have any other solutions 
against directory scraping that have been useful.
