I think the issue is a little worse than just 3rd party apps.  Most MS
products use the IE engine to render HTML.  This being the case, you
still have to apply all IE patches to ensure that the engine is update
to date for products such as office and outlook.

Using Firefox instead of IE just means that instead of one piece of
software that you have to maintain, you now have two that must be
maintained.  

Is that really what you wanted to do?
