EDUCAUSE annually conducts a Core Data Survey (http://www.educause.edu/coredata). A summary chapter from the 2004 survey on "IT Organization, Staffing, and Planning" is available at http://www.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/pub8002c.pdf A few observations in response to your questions: * 24.8% of all institutions report that the CIO is the title of their "highest ranking IT administrator"; 21% report that it is a VP; the results differ considerably based upon type of institution * 30.7% of "top IT administrators" report to president; 25.1% report to highest ranking academic officer; 24% report to highest ranking administrative officer. Note that only 11.5% report to CFO. * 46.5% of "top IT administrators" are "members of the president's cabinet". Note that there is a subtle but important difference in the distinction between CIO versus "top IT administrator". In other words, the percentage of CIO's that are members of the president's cabinet would be lower than 46.5%, and I am not quite sure how the data would account for individuals who hold the title of VP and CIO. I've had a similar personal experience while at the University of Maryland to what was reported from Princeton and Columbia. In addition to influence at the executive levels of the administration, it is helpful to have a single person/organization responsible for the coordination of all central IT services and relationships with the distributed IT organizations. -Rodney -------------------------------------------------- Rodney J. Our college does not have a dedicated CIO; instead the functions are spread through a number of divisions of the college. I'm curious about: 1) Do you have a CIO? 2) To whom does the CIO report? 3) Any recommendations on how to "sell" the president about the importance of having a CIO? Thank you in advance.
