1- yes we have a CIO - the position was instituted about 7 years ago. Started off as just a different name for the Director of Central Computing, but has been evolving since. 2 - the CIO reports to the Presidents Office 3 - we still have issues with authority even with a CIO. They didn't one day say - okay we have a CIO and he's in charge of all IT. We still have many little fiefdoms here, especially the wealthier research areas, that run their own IT. And it has only been recently (change in administration) that the CIO has been able to make policy. Centralizing some things has always made sense, such as security, data communications, help desk, disaster planning, etc. But it has been a big culture change here. Without that centralized CIO with the associated strategic planning, how are IT dollars best spent? How are redundancies avoided? How do you ensure standard operating practices (such as firewalls, IDS, patch management, backups, etc). Good luck Carolann G. Our college does not have a dedicated CIO; instead the functions are spread through a number of divisions of the college. I'm curious about: 1) Do you have a CIO? 2) To whom does the CIO report? 3) Any recommendations on how to "sell" the president about the importance of having a CIO? Thank you in advance.
