I'm going to chime in. I've had the line of four letter certs as long as
my arm starting in the late 90s.. and it's been good and bad for my
employment opportunities.

The real way to get where you want to be is relationships. My best jobs
have and are from "hey, you should really hire this guy here because he's
experienced, has and teaches certs, speaks well with managers and doesn't
back down from significant challenges." Yeah, note that it's a blend - our
immediate community may disparage certs but the general work community
recognizes and respects them once they know what they are. Experience -
gained however you can - makes an impact. When you can handle basic tools
and scripting tasks and quickly learn and adapt to new ones and different
environments, people recognize it.

How many here think they would be working where they are if it weren't for
their reputation?

And how to build reputation is from multiple vectors as the responders here
have indicated. Get involved and you'll get somewhere.

You know, I would like to know how the folks from Hackers for Charity that
have gone over as volunteers then come back to the States have done
career-wise.
