That's the commonest form of socialized medicine, yes (and, while I'm
not aware of any others, I wouldn't be so rash as to state that it is

I see your point, and raise you, define a public place.  I am with
the prohibition on public places, but our terminology may vary.

I'm not entirely sure where I stand on that.  To me the line between
public places and private places is not, in general, clear-cut.

Okay, let's begin at extremes. Should smoking, if we ignore safety issues,
be allowed on air planes?

Good question.

On long distance flights, the fact that they recirculate the air, usually 
leads to me walking away with a chest infection, because their filters 
aren't as good as they need to be, and I catch someone else's disease. 
That's one of the big reasons I hate air travel - it literally makes me 
ill.

Now, if the smoke from cigarettes can be confined to the smokers, then I'm 
happy for them to smoke. Since I don't see any way this can happen, I'd 
like to exercise my right to breathe air (not smoke).
