We would, but they wouldn't get as much publicity in our circles.

That would be a flawed analogy as it it now obvious they played a
significant role in evolution.

Is it, by any chance and in any way, similar to those late 80s, early
90s virus exchange bulletin boards?

Malware has one use and is essentially evil. Tool is what you make out
or with it.
