In the construction industry a "Firewall" is a solid, fire resistant or

time (x number of hours fire rating).

I have always associate the term with the bulkhead between the engine
compartment and the pilot /driver in front-engined aircraft and cars, which
keeps the heat out but lets through pipes and cables for control, heaters,
etc. Which is a closer match to firewalls as meant in this context.
