Re: Access to Porn sites?

We don’t block. A lot of sites that are useful to our photography, fashion
design, and illustration classes get picked up in the filters.

Academic freedom grants instructors the rights to teach whatever they want
in the class room. It does not mean the college provides access to anything
and everything. It does not dictate exposure of client computers to
categories of websites with a poor track record for malicious behavior. If
the instructor wants to teach that material in their classroom, they may do
so. Like much of their other material, they must then provide it.

We’ve had zero issues here. If one comes up, I’m sure we’ll be happy to
work with the faculty to make sure they can do what is needed.

We are considering the same. It was tried a few years ago and undone due
to a lot of pushback. We are trying again using security concerns ad one
of the justifications. We already stopped gambling sites with no fallout.

I would be interested to hear others experiences with it. We will be
using Checkpoint to do our filtering.

Thanks,

Hi All,

We at Mills College have been kicking around the idea of blocking access
to porn sites on our network. Needless to say, we have gotten some push
back. Our plan (if it is green-lighted) is to use the built-in "adult"
filters that our Palo Alto firewall provides.

I am curious as to how many of you block porn sites, and if you do and
especially if you use a Palo Alto device, have you had to do a lot of
fine-tuning of your filters to eliminate false-positives?

Thanks.

Babak
