WE also do a wipe, either 3X or more depending on the machine. We do not
put an OS on the machine as they are often ready for the recycle bin when we
get rid of them. If the drive is not working we dissect it similar to what
Charlie said.

For working hard drives we 3x overwrite them and reload an OS on the machine
before it goes out to surplus sale. If the hard drive doesn't work, we have
a couple of students who enjoy taking out their frustrations on the hard
drives with a roofing hammer.

Hi Folks....

We're looking for efficiencies (who isn't?) - What process do you follow
to
securely dispose of old hard drives? Do you sanitize them?...what
process/software do you use? Do you allow them to be sold/donated? Do
you
grind/shred them? Do you degauss them?

We are sanitizing them, but we're wondering if it would just be cheaper to
use
a secure recycling service? (I know DOE/DOD does some of
that....depending on
the "level"....)

Looking forward to hearing what everyone is doing....

Thanks,

Michael
