For UNC-Chapel Hill see email for students etc here:
http://help.unc.edu/75
"After you leave the university, your access to services that require an Onyen is subject to termination. For more
information please see How long will my Onyen account stay active after I graduate?"
The alumni association offers an email service (for membership cost)

For retirees see http://hr.unc.edu/epanf/general/retiree-resources
"When an individual is transitioning from active employee status to retiree status (e.g., no longer receiving a pay
check directly from UNC-Chapel Hill), than a special request must be made to keep an active UNC Personal ID number
(PID) as a University affiliate. This status is necessary to be issued a UNC One Card as a retiree and to retain an
Onyen and e-mail access, as examples. "

Subject: [SECURITY] Retiree Email Accounts

Hello All,

I have been tasked with investigating how other institutions are handling retiree email accounts. We have had multiple
requests for these types of accounts recently and we still aren’t sure how we want to handle them. I was hoping that
other folks on this list might have addressed this issue already and I might be able gain a bit of insight into the
issue that could be applied at our institution.

A few of the major issues that I see right off the bat:

 1. Do we allow them to use the same email account and archive/purge all of their email that existed from when they
were employed at the College?
 2. Do we create a new account with a new email address that designates the account as a retiree account?
 3. How long should they have access to the retiree email (1 year, 2 years, forever...)?
 4. Can they extend the use of the email account for a longer period of time?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
--
