I don't mean to highjack Greg's survey, and I have provided answers
below, but has anyone else been experiencing a dramatic increase in
copyright infringement notices from the RIAA this year?

Our largest problem so far this year has been Ares file sharing and it
has been a substantial one. We are looking to find out what other
schools are doing to affect Ares on the network:

1)       Has Ares been a problem for you this year?

Yes.

2)       Do you block Ares?

No.

3)       Do you shape P2P?

Not anymore.

4)       Do you block P2P?

No.

5)       Any other technical solution for combating the illegal use
and/or network impact of P2P and/or Ares?

Sort of - we rate limit each student with Clean Access, but we do not
throttle back P2P in general.

6)       When did you start doing any of the above?

We have used packet shapers for the past 3-4 years, but stopped this
year.

7)       Any numbers you are willing to share? (if I share any off
list
comments back to list I will merge them to keep them unidentifiable)

a.       Violations?

More over the past three weeks than all of last year combined.

b.       Total on campus student count (for ratio)?

~26,000.
