I definitely recommend a personal firewall on dial-up or anytime
you're not behind a router or f/w that you maintain.  I worked on a
friend's machine recently who only had dial-up who had a backdoor
connection to a machine in latin america.  If your machine is
accessible on the internet, it will be likely be compromised in 20
minutes.
