RE: Cable Vs. DSL

Charles,

DSL is point to point until it reaches the DSLAM, from that point forward it is all IP based network. Cable on the
other hand is a shared LAN similar to a corporate network.

The only niceties both the architectures are missing is that subscriber does not get the added/ managed security and
benefits of firewalls, tiered network architecture, proxy services, etc., that are generally present in a corporate
network. (This is relative as to how seriously the corporation takes network security. If the corporation does not have
good security measures then you are vulnerable there as well). On the other hand, the cable operator does not have
interest in the security of your connection. They are just providing you with a connection and security is left in the
end user's hand.

Regardless of DSL or cable both don’t have any security by design. So, it depends what level of security you require.
Although, you can implement firewall and or encryption to protect your system but at the cost of performance
degradation.

Ideally speaking, a better solution would be a Unix based firewall or a hardened Unix server to function as a gateway
before the traffic get in and out of your PC or home LAN.

My preference is DSL since it is point to point. My 2 cents….

Cheers,
- I

Let me just throw this out for debate...

Cable splits its up and down traffic, making it more difficult to sniff valuable data. Does this change anything?
