since you brought up router/firewall, do you think a
simple router such as linksys or netgear which does
NAT, drop based on port number and port forwarding
provides enough security for SOHO users behind a
cable/dsl modem?

My 2 cents is... regardless of whether it's Cable or
DSL you are wide
open to all sorts of nastiness. I know I'm echoing
most of the responses
when I say without a router/firewall you are at risk
regardless.

you have to look at how ISPs think about security.
Cable or xDSL are the technologies used to connect
you to their
equipements... the IP you receive is given by the
ISP you have choosen.
