As I keep testifying myself -
A few years ago there was a paper which stated that 36 hours after a 
machine goes online, without any announcements - it gets "attacked" in 
some way (maybe just scanned).

Nowadays, especially if you are on broadband, you can get scanned up to 
16 times a minute.

If you are using an un-protected windows box, especially if you are 
already seeded with one Trojan horse to provide with an easier entry 
point, it is very obvious that you are already in trouble.
