It certainly can. Archives are meant to be helpful and allow people to see WHAT was being talked about and WHO was saying it. I've often mailed people from a thread that happened 2 years ago to find out if they ever had particular results and I'm still getting email regarding projects that I might have appeared on a mailing list for a 1 week stint.
Chris,Cut me some slack, 'eh? We're all using the same Internet and you and I are involved in a number of projects.
Obscuring an email address isn't synonymous with preventing an archive viewer from being able to obtain the address of a correspondent.
The scheme used by http://marc.theaimsgroup.com is a simple but reasonably effective method of obscuring an email address so that it is more difficult to harvest but remains usable by humans.
Other schemes such as using a mailto link are somewhat helpful too.
I hate spam and there are times when I think my 30mb of bayesian classifications + spam assassin to deal with spam is not sufficient but people can still interact with me. It's a crappy problem to deal with but hiding isn't going to solve the problem.
I hate spam too, and I'm not suggesting people hide from it. I think it's reasonable to obscure email addresses to make automated harvesting less successful.
