You can configure certain web servers to grab a file from the local disk,
gunzip/untar/uncompress it on the fly as it is streamed to the other side.
Not saying this is what's happeneing, but it _can_ be done.

Erf...  Just use wget! :-P  Who needs a browser other than Lynx anyway?
