Re: Netbook & Distro for Bob

Based on your recommendations Bob picked up a pristine (not a scratch, no signs of use whatsoever) Acer Aspire One.
The netbook was for the seller's girlfriend, but she never used it. Bob loves it when people have fire sales in the
local classifieds... though he felt a little sad for the seller when he saw an engagement ring as one of his sale
items. OUCH!!!

Anywho, here are the specs:

Aspire One D255-1268
Intel Atom N550
1GB DDR3 (expandable to 2GB for $20)
250GB HDD
Windows 7 Starter 32-bit
Manufactured 2010

Thanks for all the suggestions, right now Bob is downloading BT5R3...

I also wanted to mention that while its not been discussed for obvious reasons the Aspire One that I have is
currently running Windows 7. My son needed a laptop that I wouldn't care if it got stolen or lost so I put Windows 7
on it for kicks. It has an Atom N270 CPU dual core 1.60 ghz and 2 GB RAM. Windows 7 doesn't have any issues. Just
food for thought if you ever have to dual boot or reuse it for something else.

Ergonomics are a big one here

My eee 900 is small, and expandable, but for real hacking requiring lots of typing at the terminal, the keyboard is
too narrow and the keys are too small, so you will be using backspace alot...

My wife has an Aspire One (retired coworkers hacktop) which was great for her school... the keyboard is much better
for typing quickly, little wider screen too which is nice.

Funny thing, my friend's name is Bob, too!
He uses a now a little bit seasoned Asus eeePC 901. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asus_Eee_PC#Eee_900_series
The 13000mAh battery from Amazon extends the battery life to up to 10 hours.
An 802.11n capable Wifi card plus external antenna connector does the rest. Not to mentione that BT5 runs quite
reasonable on it. I recommend to run the distro of your choice from an SD card though as the built in SSD is f....ing
 slow.

...want more inspirations? The first page I came accross on Google:

My friend Bob is looking for a reasonably priced netbook with the following qualities:

-Wireless (with expansion capabilities in case Bob wants to do wireless bridging, etc.)
-Hardware that plays well with Linux
-Decent battery life
-Durable (will spend most of its life bouncing around in a backpack with other electronics)

Bob was also wondering if there are any live distros out there that are privacy-centric. He was hoping the OS he
boots to would be anonymized every time (randomized MACs, hostname, etc. and any other privacy countermeasures).
Sorry, I know Bob is pretty paranoid, I tell him so all the time...

Bob would appreciate any advice or recommendations. Thanks!
