Relatively simple look at the diagram here http://pinouts.ru/Slots/USB_pinout.shtml then use your multimeter to check continuity on the pins to the existing cable and you'll be able to tell which wire goes to which pin, then you're set.
I should have added, there is a bit of circuitry in the cable as well that does come conversion - all I know is voltage dropping. Not sure if that will affect it but I'll certainly give it a go. Robin
