Gun murder rate statistics and other crime statistics broken down by
states are available all over the Internet and easily found with Google.
In general, the New England states have the lowest gun murder rates in the
country. (Memo to Michael Moore: some states almost as low as Canada).
OTOH, southern states tend to have much higher gun murder rates.

Basically in Massachusetts we don't kill each other, we just steal each
other's cars.

Yes, it is a pretty sad commentary that a 16-year kid has access to

No its not. Both of my children have easy access to guns - they're in
their closets!

That's why I was asking the gun company in 2005 if they could trace the
serial number to see where the gun was originally purchased to try to
understand if the legit gun distribution system was supplying guns to
kids.
Maybe they have a dirty dealer on their hands. Do you know if gun
makers
ever do this kind of research?

Gun makers sell to FEDERALLY LICENSED gun dealers - why investigation
can the manufacturers do that wouldn't be covered by the FBI and ATF,
exactly? As for your letter's request, its just silly. The standard
procedure of any crime involving a gun is to trace that gun's life.
Laws dictate when and where serial numbers are added to guns (its a
Class A felony to remove any of them at any time or to be in
possession of a firearm which has had the serial number removed or
altered in any way). Each and every gun can be traced from
manufacturer to dealer. In THEORY, records on buyers are not held
publicly - but dealers are required to maintain their records for
several years. This has been the case for quite some time. If that gun
had a serial number they would know exactly where it came from.

BTW, in spite of this story, Massachusetts actually has one of the
lowest
gun murder rates in the country. I suspect this is true because because
we
also have one of the lowest gun ownership rates in the country.

I wouldn't suspect that to be the case at all, but I'd enjoy reviewing
where you got your information.
