The latest VPN gear from PGP Security is centered around the Gauntlet VPN Firewall (available on NT and Unix), the WebShield E-ppliance (Sun Netra Appliance with Gauntlet pre-configured). On the client side, PGP Security is about to release the PGP Desktop Security 7.0 product. This product has the orginal features of e-mail and data encryption and a VPN client that is IPSec (with Mode-Cfg support), and new this year is full blown Personal Firewall and Personal Intrusion Detection in one package. This makes it the world's first and only single install product with all 5 of these core security products. In addition, PGP Security has also thrown in a few cool things like ICQ encryption. Available for Win95/98/NT/Win2k and Mac. -GJ -----Original Message----- From: sean.kelly () lanston com [mailto:sean.kelly () lanston com] Sent: Friday, August 18, 2000 10:46 AM To: ibarra () hawk com; firewall-wizards () nfr net Subject: RE: [fw-wiz] VPN for *DSL/CableModem Users My initial inclination would be to reccommend some VPN software based on IPSec. Windows 2000 actually uses IPSec and should be much improved over the PPTP software built-in to NT. Also, 3Com and a number of other companies have produced network cards that handle a bunch of the encryption-related stuff in hardware, and have Windows 2000 drivers specifically intended for their use as VPN servers. I haven't investigated it much, but I'm fairly sure that Cisco has IPSec built in to some of its routers and clients should be able to connect to the routers directly for VPN purposes. As for other software, PGP.Com has client and server software called PGPNet that does IPSec-based VPN stuff. The server, I beleive, is only avaible for Unix platforms, but the client has Windows versions as well.
