Allison, on windows you can use the cipher command to wipe free space on
the system.  It runs in three passes filling up the entire disk.  It is
the /w switch with the volume so something like 'cipher /w c:'.  You
could set this as a scheduled task (no additional software to install).
We also recommend eraser and dban to customers depending on their need.

The Mac has 'Secure Empty Trash' which securely deletes/"shreds" the
files in the trash can.

 

What you have found for the PC that is functionally similar, is easy to
install/use, and is free or low cost?
