Re: New student username/password

For quite a few years we have automatically generated accounts for new
students. Initially a student obtained their username and initial
password when they received their ID card. The username is printed on
the card and password and card PIN printed on a separate paper.

With the advent of web enrollment the students username is generated
early on in the process. The password that the student chooses is
transfered from the enrollment system to the student system once
sufficient verification has been achieved. Access to services is
governed by other rules depending on which courses they enroll in.

Hello,

For years we've had students wait until they are on campus and have
attended a tech session before we give them their username and
password. We've been under a lot of pressure to change this so that
the students will be able to access campus services over the summer
which require a username and password.

I'm wondering how other institutions are handling this situation in a
secure way.

Thanks,
Aaron
