I have to agree with the others that leverage orientation as the
opportunity. We still provide information on the web through a portal
for students. However, it's during orientation that we really emphasize
security and it's importance.

We also have an automated system that checks the security of a system
(patches, passwords, etc) before it is allowed to register on the
network for the first time. Since we allow students to "self-register"
their systems, this provides an automated way to physically "touch" and
check their systems.

"Orientation seems to be the only time students listen to us :-)"

That's really the only time of the year I think anyone has a student's
undivided attention.

We send out a computing resources CD to all of our incoming students
during the summer. McAfee, MS updates, CCA, and links to HelpDesk
information on the Web. So we know they're getting the software
requirements at least. If they're paying attention to anything else on
the CD we just got lucky. It's all on the Web too if they ever need to
find it again.

Our Help Desk developed a 30 minute presentation that is done during
summer freshmen orientation. It's mandatory so every student has to
attend.
They
get
a VTNET cd which contains ensures their firewall is on, set for auto
patch
updates, installs AV software if needed. They're told to run the CD
before
connecting to our net when they come back for fall check-in. We've
just
completed our 4th year so hopefully we've cycled through the entire
student body.

Orientation seems to be the only time students listen to us :-).
