With the new school year in gear ..... and double our res connections,
there are a few questions we have around Residence Halls and what other
institutions are doing to provide reliable, secure conectivity to the
same.

1. What type of connection supplies res halls (bandwidth etc.)? 10/100
Mbps shared port per pillow w/ Gigabit Ethernet backbone in large
residence halls. We house students in campus-owned houses as well and
these buildings have a 100 Mbps uplink.

2. Is the residence connected in any way to the institute network, or is
it on a separate feed? Do you outsource your residence connection?
Connected directly to the campus network.

3. What technology is is place to stop (if any) peer-to-peer sharing
etc?
Packetshaper is in place to limit peer-to-peer, although we do not
completely stop it.

4. Do you get complaints from RIAA, MPAA, etc?
We have in the past, but not recently.

5. How many users are connected in res halls?
Approximately 800.

6. Are users authenticated? By what means?
No port authentication. Must use AD username and password to access
network resources. All wireless connection require a VPN connection to
get access to network resources including the Internet.

7. Are user machines inspected before connection is allowed?
There were not this year and we had tons of problems. There will be
something in place next fall.

8. Are res halls bound by Service Level Agreements / Policies?
Bound by policies.

9. What is the guaranteed uptime of res halls (if a guarantee is made at
all)?
No guarantee is made, but as stated in one of the other emails, we treat
these buildings with the same priority as our academic and
administrative buildings.

10. Are res halls supported by the institue helpdesk, or does the res
hall have its own helpdesk?.
Institute helpdesk.

11. What is the demarcation point for responsibility to the institute
(switch port, wall jack)?
In theory it is the wall jack, but due to all of the virus and spyware
related problems this year, we found ourselves going beyond the wall
jack.

12. What are the policy (if policy exists) actions for gross network
abuse? Refer to the Dean of Students Office. If network degradation
occurs due to abuse, the port is immediately disabled.

Hope this helps,

Any information you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated....
