To be honest lots of firewalls are able to withstand a DDOS attack, they
drop the connections, in my book that's withstanding an attack. If the
internet pipe fills up, it doesn't stop the >firewall doing it's job :-)
just stops internet access, when the attack has finished your network still
works :-)

Assuming your network doesn't require access to other networks outside the
lan, the internet, serve out any websites and you don't need email, then
that's fine.  Good old firewall ;)
Otherwise, and in most cases I would think, you're pretty screwed, firewall
can't help except in logging the IP's of the attacking zombie's.
