Well, the FIRST thing you should learn, after getting your MCSE, is basic UNIX, probably via a LINUX distribution.

A really GOOD Sysadmin can do the basics in either of the major systems, Windows or *nix.

For a home network, you can't go wrong with one of those little DSL/Cable router/firewalls.  D-Link, Netgear, Cisco, 
etc.

And with a slightly higher grade of hardware firewall, you can start configuring specific services, etc, through the 
firewall. . .
