Generally I've been quite irritated with the unusability of MRTG and the
illegibility of the underlying code.  I would rather hand code each and
every snmp probe than fight with getting mrtg to cooperate.  The stuff
people are doing with rrdtool looks far better, but I haven't gotten to
play with any of that yet.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't rrdtool basically a database to log 
numerical values? By itself, it doesn't read any data at all. It needs mrtg 
or similar programs to feed data to it.
The graphical output of rrdcgi and its colleagues (sp?) is better than the 
orginal mrtg graphs though.
