Re: Hackers and Painters

I like to compare hackers and scientists with architects and construction
builders. An architect can be an artist, but doesn't have to be one. Most
buildings are built using a few standard design rules, nothing artistic about
it. Only a few buildings are works of art. The same goes for programming.
Most programs are built around a few well known design principles. Only a few
programs are works of art.

Groetjes,
Peter.

Every time I look at OpenBSD, especially the internals I'm strongly reminded of the German Bauhaus movement and/or high end carpentry tools. Minimalist and functional style, yet at the same time somehow it ends up being very elegant and pleasent to look at and use. As for the carpentry tools just open up a Lee Valley catalog (*) or something similar and you'll see what I mean. It seems to me that "correctness" in many, perhaps all, things leads to a certain kind of beauty (especially by those that understand and appreciate the functionality of the item in question).
