Ed,

Yes, I received a variety of offers in different capacities, ranging from
forensic analyst to consultant to operational infosec.

While I can't elaborate the relative quality of the program at Iowa State to
those offered at other institutions, I can discuss my feelings about it on
its own merits. Overall, I find it to be an excellent program with great
resources and faculty. At ISU, its an interdepartmental program, utilizing
resources from the Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Political
Science, Management Information Systems, and Mathematics departments.
Candidates are able to create their own program of study, as long as it
includes a few fundamental classes (networking protocols, intro to infosec,
ethics of infosec, and info warfare).

I have to emphasize that our faculty is top notch. The program lead (Doug
Jacobsen) has industry as well as academic credentials. He has testified in
front of Congress regarding InfoSec issues and is a hell of a nice guy to
boot. He's pretty representative of the rest of the InfAs faculty...a good
blend of real and book experience, as well as being quality people to work
with and under.

There are some very interesting programs in place in Ames these days as
well. There's a dedicated forensic lab, an IDS/IPS research lab, and the
ISEAGE (Internet Scale Event and Attack Generation Environment) lab, that
creates a virtual Internet to send real attacks against real machines to
test responses. This is in addition to a campus that places an emphasis on
technology university-wide

I'm starting to ramble, so I'll stop now. If there are any more specific
questions you might have, feel free to ask away, either here or off-list.

-Jon

Jon, I was wondering if you received any job offers during or after earning
the degree. Also, could you elaborate on the quality of the MS-IA program at

Iowa State?

I've been researching several MS-IA programs taught at several universities
in Virginia. Does anyone on this list have experience with the program at
George Washington, James Madison or George Mason University? I believe the
JMU program is on-line whereas the other two are classroom programs.

Norwich is an accredited university; it was the first private military
college in the US.

I have an MS-IA from Iowa State. While I could see how some of it could
easily be taught via an online format, I'm grateful for the hands-on lab
facilities and other interations that being in a classroom granted. I
wouldn't have done it any other way.

Potential employers tend to be quite impressed by the degree, once they
realize what it is. It's still not a very well known program or course of
study, but I feel that it's slowly gaining more recognition.

That is very encouraging - even I have been thinking of doing MSIA -
but does it matter if it is from Norwich or from any other univ.
Capella Univ also claims they have some NSA recognition? Any one
aware of Capella there?
Thanks,
raj

I know people have said it is educational, however how is this degree
viewed by potential employers? Is Norwich Unv an accredited university,
Capella? Do Employers believe such an education from these online
universities are in fact valuable?

Comments, Opinion?
