Likewise, you are not allowed to hit someone walking down the street
wearing punching gloves nor are you allowed to continue punching once
the threat is no longer direct (say, he is on the ground, his back is
turned,...).  In those cases, YOU are the attacker and are thrown in
jail.

Consider that if someone starts throwing punches at you, you are
generally allowed to throw punches back and are not required merely
to attempt to block the punches thrown.
