Actually, somebody else contributed the initial shared object support,  
which you checked in:

        patches to make building RPMs and shared libraries easier.

I just added stuff to set the soname, in response to discovering that  
a lot of Linux distributions either set it to the full name of the  
library or don't bother to set it at all, so that if you link with  
libpcap your app looks for the exact version with which it was linked.
