I uploaded Release Candidate 2 to http://www.tcpdump.org/beta this evening - please give it a test and make sure it works as you expect. I'm want to ship it by the end of the month (this time, I promise!), as it's been stable for quite some time now, and it's long overdue.

Note to Linux distributions and *BSD systems that include libpcap:

There's now a rule to make a shared library, which should work on Linux and *BSD (and OS X).

It sets the soname of the library to "libpcap.so.1"; this is what it should be, *NOT* libpcap.so.1.0 or libpcap.so.1.0.0 or something such as that.

We've been maintaining binary compatibility between libpcap releases for quite a while; there's no reason to tie a binary linked with libpcap to a particular release of libpcap.

(I have some other changes to attempt to make it work on Solaris and HP-UX, but haven't tested them yet, so I'm not planning on checking them in for libpcap 1.0.0.)

Should this go into a README of some sort? (I don't want to have to explain sonames to people trying to build Wireshark on one version of a Linux distribution and run it on another version with a later libpcap in it any more.)
