True.. but if your gcc is in /usr/local/bin, and you're logged in as root, 
which gcc won't return anything.

My suggestion *ONLY* applies if the path that gcc is installed in is not 
part of root's path.

Based on the observed behavior, I strongly suspect the above is true.
