After -i you are suppose to give interface name. 

for example if your sniffing interface if eth0 

snort -i eth0  will start snort, but it will look for
config file in current directory or you can start it
using this command 

snort -i eth0 -c /etc/snort/snort.conf

if you config file is in /etc/snort
