I don't believe this was answered. I believe you're thinking of
WiFiFoFum and it can only be installed on jailbroken devices. Here is a

Ye that looks like it.

How can it do that from a single device?

Slightly off topic but something I'm curious about, there is an iPhone
app I saw that shows APs on a radar type screen to indicate what direction
each is away from you. I know you can't do this accurately with a single
radio but the person showing me swore that it was usually spot on.

Anyone any idea how they would be doing it?

I'm thinking of getting a Samsung Galaxy S4, Android version that
Google recently announced. Do these apps require root or just Vanilla

I agree w/Larry -- Check out WiFi Analyzer for Android.

Brian,

We talk about this quite a bit in SANS SEC617. I hate to say it, but
I
think you are correct on the iPhone side, mostly due to the fact that
the wireless drivers are "less than open". To my knowledge, monitor
mode
support does not exist on non-jailbroken iDevices (I'm not sure about
jailbroken ones).

My solution? Go Android. I picked up a Nexus 7 and use the following
tools frequently:

Kisbee - Zigbee sniffer (for use with 3rd party hardware)
Pcap Capture - Monitor mode WiFi capture with a specific ALFA wireless
card and OTG cable
WiFiFoFum - Rogue AP locator
WiFi Analyzer - Kismet-like wireless discovery
WiGLE WiFi Wardriving - Kismet-like wireless discovery
Cloudshark - Cloud based wireshark for analyzing pcaps

Hope that helps.

I am
looking for a simple solution, not a dedicated device.

Have a great day,
