You could possibly do something with the TI Chronos watch.  The dev kit is reasonably priced, especially when they do 
their periodic deals.  I got mine, including shipping to the UK, for $25.

I'm not sure about range though, you might need to check signal strength rather than just presence.  If I can find 
where mine is I'll have a play.

Has anyone set up their machines to auto-lock when they move away from
them using a bluetooth device? Seeing as I don't always take my phone
when I leave my desk I was wondering whether there were any other
devices that could be used for this, something small that could be
left in a pocket or on a belt loop. Ideally it would be a class 3 or 2
to keep the range short.

What software is good for this for OS X and Linux?
