I suppose it also matters if the person going though the resumes is a tech or an HR monkey. I remember being at a job fair, saying I was a CNA (Certified Novell Admin, this was many years ago) as being ask to look at data entry jobs. I think it really depends on where you go to work and the availability of the skill set in the labor market. It also depends if the company is looking for a "show pony" or a "pack mule." If you are the only person that has a specific needed skill set within 300 miles and the skill set is mission critical, they won't care if you failed elementary school. Having staff with degrees is a selling point for some businesses. It may also be required for some businesses due to contractual reasons. Having an advanced degree might help you get that management job if that's what you want. But, so might giving presentations at Shmoo and having a high traffic website. :) I don't have a college degree and it has never been a major problem. In my opinion there are more important factors: communication skills, empathy, reliability, determination, attitude, flexability, measurable accomplishments, and having a passion for your work.
