You will generally get out of academia what you put into it. I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock into what employers may or may not be looking for; your interlocutor's statement may reflect reality in his current program/profession, but doesn't necessarily reflect on yours. It sounds like you'd be happier not continuing your current program. You do get more from academia besides a degree, although it's a pretty expensive approach to making contacts.
