upgrading the kernel in Backtrack 3

Anyone have any ideas on how to upgrade kernel in Backtrack3? I've upgraded
and used new kernels before, but I'm kinda new to this...it errored on me
the last time I tried to make the kernel...just need some pointers...thanks!
