Seems like there would be very little problem with passengers sitting in adjacent seats boarding with the 
higher-priority passenger. 


This, and related comments, reflect a pragmatic fact of actual boarding processes, but most have not seemed to carry 
through to the unfortunate fact that this implies:

    A highly optimized model is immediately broken by the compelling
    facts of various exceptions.

    Unless the model includes well-known and common 'exceptions', the
    model is a fantasy.  Literally.

Here is the core demonstration of failure:

    The instant a gate agent is required to consider exceptions, things
    move out of the model and into an ad hocracy, which then kills
    optimization.

That's why I think the Southwest Airlines individually-numbered model is probably the best:  It permits the airline 
to do /pre-calculation/ of the various factors that are considered realistic and important, to figure out the most 
reasonable ordering.  The passenger and gate-agent experience of this is pretty reasonable, IMO.
