When I got married, over three decades ago, it was the custom of the state of Pennsylvania to require me to change the
name on my driver's license to my husband's name. At that time an ACLU lawyer advised me that I could call myself by
any name I wanted to, or by different names in different settings, so long as I was not doing it to defraud anyone. He
noted, for example, that I could call myself "Howard Johnson", but not if I was planning to open a restaurant in my
name (substitute "Bob Evans" now, I suppose).

Has the law in Pennsylvania or the US changed? I know it's harder to get convincing papers in other names, but does
the underlying law still permit me to call myself by any name (or names) I like?

(oh, and about the driver's license -- I moved to our new house before I got married, and I somehow never got around to
telling them about the marriage, and I don't think they care any longer)
