FWIW, Bill Cheswick did a keynote some years ago at a USENIX Security Symposium on exactly this topic. Something else you might consider: laying siege to a castle is somewhat different to a DoS attack over the 'net. Of most significance, if the castle is large enough, it can be self sustaining for a long period of time.
