Here at UNC Charlotte, we use Cisco Amp for our University systems, but we recommend Sophos (home edition) for student macs and personal devices. At one point we used Sophos enterprise for our Macs and it worked really well, it just did not give us the same visibility and Protection as a full EPR. ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------- Jessie McGaughy | CISSP-ISSAP <https://www.isc2.org/Certifications/CISSP>, CISSP, <https://www.isc2.org/Certifications/CISSP> CCSP <https://www.isc2.org/Certifications/CCSP>, PMP <https://www.pmi.org/certifications/types/project-management-pmp>, C|EH <https://www.eccouncil.org/programs/certified-ethical-hacker-ceh/>, ITIL <https://www.axelos.com/best-practice-solutions/itil> Chief Information Security Officer UNC Charlotte | Kennedy Bldg 330B 9201 University City Blvd | Charlotte, NC 28223 jmcgaug1 () uncc edu <jbeauman () uncc edu> | Phone: 704-687-8548 itservices.uncc.edu ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------- If you are not the intended recipient of this transmission or a person responsible for delivering it to the intended recipient, any disclosure, copying, distribution, or other use of any of the information in this transmission is strictly prohibited. Yes, I’m aware, which is why I wasn’t asking about protection of University systems. I specifically noted that this would be for students, but perhaps I didn’t make it clear that it would be for their own personal machines. Therefore, any free product should be allowable. -Cathy Dr. Catherine J Ullman Senior Information Security Forensic Analyst Information Security Office University at Buffalo cende () buffalo edu *From:* The EDUCAUSE Security Community Group Listserv < SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU> *On Behalf Of *Scantlin, Aaron J. *Sent:* Thursday, June 18, 2020 12:56 PM *To:* SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU *Subject:* Re: [SECURITY] Free AV for Macs recommendation? Cathy, Though we have a paid solution here (McAfee), the Mac community in general now sees Malwarebytes as the best free solution for macOS. It's what I run on all my systems at home. The free version doesn't offer on-access scanning, but it can schedule scanning runs. It's multithreaded code, so it runs quite quickly, but you wouldn't want to run a scan when you're trying to do any other work. It does let you know about important updates, but it doesn't keep nagging you to buy it, at least not until you open its console. Like many institutions, we are balking at the cost of the SEP renewals and starting to think about some alternatives including no longer including students in our SEP renewal. As a result, we’ll probably recommend Windows Defender for M$ systems, but we’d need a free option for students who use Macs. Any recommendations for a free AV product for Mac out there? Of course if anyone has any other feedback, we’d be open to hearing it as well. Thank you in advance.
