Has anyone used CopySense from AudioMagic. I have deployed it, last year,
on the student network and the results were very interesting. We used it as
a tutorial when an infringement is detected and sanctions were applied to
the users with more the 2 infringements. They have a new product for
wireless network too. The negative side is its the price.

We have our 5060 tied in to AD and do just that. We had the same
experience as Richard: No DMCA complaints since implementing Palo and
blocking bittorrent. There was no outcry when we blocked bittorrent but we
were already rate-limiting bittorrent and making individual exceptions for
faculty and staff. The Palo has enhanced this service as before
implementation we made exceptions based on IP address, which was limited to
a given workstation. The Palo and AD allow us to grant exemptions by userid
so that it works anywhere within our address space for that individual.

Doesn't the PA5050 have the ability to tie into active directory? One
thought I've had was to use that functionality and make exceptions for
bittorrent after having faculty go through an exception process. Mind you,
I do not have a PA, but after a few presentations, my team and I have
brainstormed such a scenario to help. Not sure how viable this option is,
but in theory it seems do-able.

How are you blocking Bittorrent when it has some academic uses? We
blocked it and the faculty revolted, so it’s open again so we use the Net

We have the PA 5050 and it will classify (best guess) as to what it thinks
could be flagged by the RIAA, but then again there’s quite a few false
positives. What do you do when faculty/staff have a legitimate argument to
use torrents?

We had maybe a dozen last year but have not had a single one since we put
a Palo Alto device inline between our internal network and our border
devices and configured a rule to block bittorrent traffic.

A question has come up about DMCA notices in our outside audit. We know
how many we received in the last fiscal year but the auditors are wondering
about how many other institutions of higher education are receiving on an
annual basis. If any on you have an annualized number you can share, I
would appreciate it. If you would like, send it off line.

Thanks.
