With that in mind, and with the legislative environment of the last several years, is there not a great risk in anonymously providing access to the larger community ?
CALEA comes to mind: since we offer public WiFi, according to FCC 47 CFR ยง 1.20005 and the (6/9/2006) court ruling between ACE and the FCC, only "private networks" are exempt from CALEA. This doesn't really increase our risk as an institution though, it just means we had to create procedures for following CALEA. I'm not aware of other legal risks, I suppose the P2P provision of the higher-ed reauthorization could be included, but public WiFi is just a quantitative increase in P2P attempts, and we were already blocking P2P through our IPS. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Brian Basgen Information Security Pima Community College
