Subject: [SECURITY] securely disposing of old backup tapes?

I was wondering if anybody has any policies and/or procedures in
place for securely disposing of old backup tapes? Are there any
known rules or regulations for public universities or state
entities regarding the disposal of this backup media? Does anybody
have any recommendations for products or procedures for destroying
backup
media? Any other thoughts would also be helpful!

Hi Craig,
This doesn't directly answer your question about tapes, but it
might be useful. We developed a document[1] on securely removing
data as an educational tool. And, IU Bloomington's Purchasing
department has a policy[2] that touches on the sale of computer
equipment[3].

Hope this helps,
